Philipp Heimberger is an economist at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), where he leads the macro research group. He holds a PhD in economics from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. In 2021, Philipp was ranked as the 60th most influential economist in Germany by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Philipp Heimberger is an economist at the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), where he leads the macro research group. He holds a PhD in economics from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. In 2021, Philipp was ranked as the 60th most influential economist in Germany by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
  • Research fields: macroeconomic policy, public finance and international economics, the macroeconomic implications of fiscal and monetary policy, the political economy of public debt, and the socio-economic impacts of globalisation.

  • Professional experience: Since 2020, Philipp has served as an expert in Austria’s Fiscal Council, an independent council monitoring fiscal policy. In 2022, the EP's ECON committee invited Philipp to participate in a panel discussion on the drivers of and solutions for high inflation and a public hearing on EU fiscal rules reform. In March 2023, he authored a report for the ECON committee assessing the role of debt sustainability analysis. Several institutions have sought his expertise, including the European Stability Mechanism and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs.
